  14. The Veronica team is proud to present you with the Golden Master
  15. version of Mac OS 8.6. Included is both the update only version, as
  16. well as the full install.
  17.  
  18. We've heard a great deal of positive experiences from you about the
  19. stability and performance of 8.6. We appreciate the feedback and are
  20. encouraged by the reports. 
  21.  
  22. This Golden Master build is being provided to developers some time
  23. before the public release. Please respect the Non-disclosure
  24. agreement, keep this release confidential, and allow us the ability to
  25. release this product at the appropriate time.
  26.  
  27. We'll begin seeding Sonata, the next revision of Mac OS 8 very soon.
  28. Stay tuned for more information!

  30. WWDC is just around the corner, if you haven't signed up to go yet, we
  31. strongly encourage you to do so. There will be some exciting news and
  32. tons of information. Don't miss it!

  34. If you know of other developers at the Select or Premier level who
  35. are not working with the pre-release seeds of Mac OS, be sure to
  36. encourage them to do so. It's important to you as a developer, for
  37. the platform, and certainly to our mutual customers. If you know of
  38. developers who are not being seeded because they are not current
  39. Apple Developer Connection members, encourage them to join at the Select
  40. or Premier membership levels to gain access to the seeds.

  87. The vast majority of developers seeded abide by their nondisclosure
  88. agreements, and for that we thank you; however, some continue to
  89. violate this trust.
  90.  
  91. These violations reduce the amount of time Apple is able to spend on
  92. the very things developers most need: better software and better
  93. support. In addition, these violations may have a severely negative
  94. effect on our ability to continue these seeds.
  95.  
  96. We appreciate any help in tracking down violations and appreciate the
  97. help we have received to date. Please see the contact information
  98. below to report infractions.

  103. Seed Download Tips
  104. ------------------

  106. Here are some tips and information we hope will ease the burden of the
  107. process of downloading the seed. Also remember that downloading during
  108. off-hours will reduce connection problems and result in faster download
  109. speeds.
  110.  
  111.     --  Be sure to use an FTP client (not a web browser) which
  112.         is set to bypass any firewall you may be behind and
  113.         which allows only one login session at a time. Also
  114.         beware that your FTP client may time out your connection
  115.         if inactive for more than a minute, thereby forcing you
  116.         to get a new password and start over.
  117.     
  118.     --  Be sure to enter your current developer information in
  119.         the fields.

  123. Digital Signature Information
  124. -----------------------------
  125.  
  126. The Veronica seed archive has been digitally signed, allowing you to
  127. verify if the software has been corrupted during download or modified or
  128. replaced in any way. It is not necessary to verify the file to use the
  129. software. The signature is merely a precaution against tampering.
  130.  
  131. PGP will report the signature is bad in all of these cases. The most
  132. likely culprit is corruption during download. Please download the
  133. file(s) again.

  135. To verify the file's integrity, perform the following steps:
  136.  
  137.     --  Obtain PGP 5 or later, commercial and freeware versions
  138.         are available:
  139.

  143.         this is not an Apple product.

  154. Veronica is the next in a series of regular Mac OS update releases.
  155.  
  156. Veronica supports the same set of machines as Mac OS 8.5 and any which
  157. may ship before the release of this OS version. This includes Apple
  158. branded Macintoshes which originally shipped with PowerPC processors.

  166.             Multitasking integrated into the nanokernel.
  167.             Multiprocessor library can run with VM enabled.

  172.         default. Includes InputSprockets, NetSprockets, and

  201.         and USB support for PostScript printers.

  203.     --  ATSUI 1.1, Unicode imaging and layout.  Enhancements from
  204.         System 8.5 include client control over memory management
  205.         and memory allocation and font fallbacks.

  207.     --  Installer 4.5.3/ Upgrader 1.2.4, which is more 
  208.         Appearance savvy, now supports volumes greater than
  209.         20Gb (2275099), supports extended Finder information, 
  210.         and contains miscellaneous bug fixes.

  212.     --  Unicode Utilities work with international text to sort 
  213.         and collate without translating to the Mac OS character
  214.         set and back.

  216.     --  Added locale support as a way of storing information
  217.         associated with cultural conventions such as calendars,
  218.         date and time formats, number and currency formats, text
  219.         sorting orders, etc.

  223. Veronica GM Release Notes
  224. =========================
  225.     
  226.     Release GM is the last seeded build of Veronica. This release 
  227.     should work on all machines supported by Mac OS 8.5 and any which may 
  228.     ship before the release of this OS version.

  233.     Since this is a final candidate, Macsbug is no longer installed.

  236. Known issues with the GM build:

  241. A Note on Component Versions
  242. ----------------------------

  244. Some of the components in Veronica may be earlier versions than those
  245. shipping at the time of release of this OS update. This is due to
  246. extensive, time-consuming integration quality assurance that is
  247. required to achieve the quality goals for such a large project.
  248. Integrating later versions of components impacts testing and could
  249. compromise the quality of the Veronica release.

  251. In Apple's OS release strategy, the latest version possible of any
  252. given component will integrate into the next OS update or release, but
  253. those components will continue to improve and be distributed as
  254. appropriate in parallel to the OS releases.

  258. Top Testing and Compatibility "Gotchas"
  259. ---------------------------------------
  260.  
  261. There are many changes in Veronica. There are some specific areas we
  262. know have a relatively high potential of causing trouble for a
  263. significant number of programs. Here are some testing recommendations
  264. which we believe should be part of your testing regimen:
  265.     
  266.     --  Print, Print, Print! - there have been changes made to the
  267.         LaserWriter driver. Be sure to test any printing facilities 
  268.         to uncover any issues.
  269.  
  270.     --  AppleScript Folder Actions server has changed, be sure to
  271.         test any folder actions you may have created to ensure
  272.         compatibility and report any problems to us ASAP!
  273.     
  274.     --  Changes have been made to the Startup Disk control panel 
  275.         If you use this in any way, verify your functionality.
